Cynthia Holmes Obituary

Cynthia Elliott Holmes was born on March 27, 1948. She was raised in the Hattonsville section of Norfolk County, where she was nurtured in a close-knit community that helped shape the woman she would become. From an early age, Cynthia had a love for style and presentation. She was always well dressed—from her childhood days through adulthood—and took great pride in her appearance. Shopping was one of her favorite pastimes, bringing her both joy and a sense of expression.

Cynthia began her education at Southwestern Elementary School in Norfolk County, attending from 1954 to 1960. She continued her academic journey at S. H. Clarke Junior High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, from 1961 to 1962. During her youth, Gracie purchased a piano for her, and Cynthia briefly took piano lessons, reflecting her appreciation for music. She later attended Crestwood High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, from 1963 to 1966, where she completed her high school education. After graduating, Cynthia moved to New York City to live with her uncle and aunt (Willie and Carrie Clark. There, she began her professional career with the C&P (Verizon) Telephone Company, embarking on a path of independence and hard work.

Cynthia will be remembered for her grace, her love of beauty, and the quiet strength she carried throughout her life. Cynthia was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, relative, and friend. She shared a special bond with her family and cherished the time spent with those closest to her. Bethel AME Church provided her comfort in her faith and carried it with her throughout her life. Her spirit and presence will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Cynthia had a love for the simple joys in life. She especially enjoyed shopping and expressing herself through fashion. She took pride in always looking her best and carried herself with elegance wherever she went. She also had an early appreciation for music, having taken piano lessons in her youth—an experience that added to her well-rounded personality and love for the arts.

Cynthia leaves behind a legacy of style, strength, and quiet confidence. She showed those around her the importance of self-care, dignity, and carrying oneself with pride. Her memory will live through the lives she touched, the love she shared, and the example she set. Though she may no longer be physically present, her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Elonzia Holmes Jr of Portsmouth, VA; one son, Darren Holmes (Fiancée, Maria); one grandson, Maurice Holmes of Upper Marlboro, MD, one "fur-baby" Jake, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
