Johnny Brooks Obituary

Johnny Leroy Brooks was born on June 1, 1948, to Janie Mae Logan and John Henry Brooks. At an early age, Johnny developed a deep love for God and his family. After the passing of his father, he felt called by God to protect and help care for those he loved. That desire to protect, serve, and care for others followed him throughout his life.

After graduating from Crestwood High School, Johnny enlisted in the United States Armed Forces, where he served as a medic during the Vietnam War. After being wounded while serving his country, Johnny continued his passion for helping others by attending Norfolk Technical Center, where he earned his certification in Medical Assistance. He also attended Norfolk State University, where he became a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Following his education, Johnny worked as a burn technician at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he cared for the sick, taught interns, and gave lectures. After retiring from Sentara, he continued serving others as a security officer at Norfolk Academy and Virginia Wesleyan College. Even in retirement, Johnny spent his time caring for those around him.

Johnny Brooks went home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2026.  Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Janie Mae Logan and John Henry Brooks; his grandparents, Emma Brooks, William J. Brooks, Inez Cross, and Jessie Cross; and his siblings, Helen Timmons, Frank Fletcher, Virginia May, Stanley Brooks, and Sheron Kaye Brooks.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Emmie Brooks; his children, Sophie Brooks, Wayne Cowell (Shannon), Danielle Cowell, and Ashley Fields; his grandchildren, Tatiana Cowell, Charles Walden, Ayuana Forrest, and Wayne Cowell, Jr.; his siblings, Joan Forbes, Geraldine King (Derrick), Brenda Tucker, and Patricia Edwards (Clifford F. Edwards, Sr., D.D.); his beloved friend Mallissia Madison and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Throughout his life, Johnny cared deeply for his family, friends, and anyone in need. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, faith, and love. His favorite saying was, “All Praise Be to God.” We have all been blessed to be touched by such an honorable man.
