Joshua Venable Braswell Jr., affectionately known as “Big Josh” or simply “Ven,” passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia, at the age of 67. Born and raised in Norfolk, VA, Josh made a lasting impact as a devoted father and grandfather, beloved brother, proud Army veteran, and cornerstone of his community.
A proud alumnus of Virginia State University, Josh went on to serve honorably in the United States Army. Following his military service, he embraced entrepreneurship as a successful business owner and home contractor. Later, he brought his energy, leadership, and unmistakable charisma to several of Virginia’s most well-known nightclubs as a general manager.
But of all the roles he played in life, the one he cherished most was being a grandfather. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with, FaceTiming, or simply talking about his granddaughter, Mya Annease Braswell. To him, being “Granddad” wasn’t just a title—it was a badge of honor and the highlight of his days. If you spent any time around Big Josh in the last 10 months, chances are you saw a picture of Mya—he carried her image with pride, showing it off like a priceless treasure.
Josh had an unshakable work ethic and a heart as generous as his laugh was unforgettable. He poured that same spirit into his community, serving on the board of the Real Deal Track organization, where he championed youth and athletics with unwavering passion. Whether he was calling his shot at the pool table, schooling friends in card games at Allure, or just stepping into a room and making it feel instantly warmer, Big Josh had a presence that couldn’t be ignored. He didn’t just show up—he arrived. And when he did, everyone around him felt like they mattered.
He is survived by his loving son, Joshua Venable Braswell III (Veronica); his cherished granddaughter, Mya Annease Braswell; siblings Brenda Thompson, Michael Braswell, Patricia Moody (Cornell), and Mark Braswell; and a host of extended family and friends who will deeply miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua Venable Braswell Sr. and Betty Ford Braswell; his siblings Bruce Braswell and Kim Braswell; and his beloved aunt, Lucille Edwards.
Big Josh will be remembered as the life of the party, the rock of his family, and a man who gave more than he ever asked for. His legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty lives on in all who had the honor of knowing him. He was truly one of one. And he will be deeply missed.
